Recent statistics published by Neilson indicate that social media is still a snowball rolling downhill. Not only is the users base continuing to increase, but the average amount of time spent on social networking sites has also increased 43% year-over-year. Neilson data indicates that 22.7 percentage of the average internet user’s time in 2010 was spent accessing and contributing to social media sites. This same category occupied 15.8 percent of the average user’s online time in 2009.

While on the surface the Torch appears the equal of the iPhone, it is severely outclassed in the application department. Not in the quality of apps, but simply in quantity. To fully compete with Apple, BlackBerry needs to focus on attracting developers that can bolster the number of apps on BlackBerry’s App World. Without app selection BlackBerry stands to lose the race for touchscreen-enabled-smartphone supremacy having barely left the starting gate.
